Rotary International is the world’s oldest service club with 33,972 clubs worldwide who volunteer time and talent to serve their communities and the world. Our motto “Service Above Self” exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s 1.2 million members.
Rotarians join their local club for many reasons. Some are drawn by the opportunity to share in charitable projects, others to network with businessmen and women and to enjoy the fellowship.
At the local level, Breakwater Daybreak has funded scholarships for local, multicultural and international students who attend Southern Maine Community College. We support scholarships for sophomores from South Portland and Cape Elizabeth who attend the four-day Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) weekend. Student dictionaries have been donated to every 3rd grade student in South Portland’s elementary schools. We provide tutoring in the high school's learning lab and respond to community needs and charitable requests.
Internationally, Breakwater Daybreak has supported literacy in Guatemala, has led a Group Study Exchange Group to India in January 2010 and has participated in the eradication of Polio during a National Immunization Day in India.
I invite you to take a look at the benefits of Rotary or join us for a Wednesday morning meeting. I look forward to a year of fellowship and service with each of you.
Michael Hulsey
President 2011-2012
